Breast Augmentation
If you feel embarrassed or self-conscious about the small size of your breasts, or feel that they are markedly disproportionate to the rest of your body, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery. Perhaps there is a noticeable difference between the size of your breasts, or perhaps their shape or size has changed with age and certain life experiences such as childbirth. Breast augmentation surgery, which enhances breasts with the use of saline implants, will give you the breasts that you desire and a new confidence in your appearance.

Procedure Details:
Meet with Dr. Moore
The most important part of your consultation will be determining the final breast size. You and Dr. Moore will decide on a size improvement, taking into consideration your overall body size and shape, as well as your pre-operative breast size. Discuss your preferences regarding breast width, height and projection. You will also discuss your medical history and any allergies, medication or conditions you may have. Those who have a family history of breast cancer should proceed with caution, as breast implants may obstruct proper mammogram reading.
What to Expect
Pre-Operative
It is important that you do not smoke or take aspirin or certain other drugs before surgery. Dr. Moore will let you know a suitable time period in which to abstain from these substances.
Do not eat or drink after midnight on the evening before surgery (unless directed to take medications by your Patient Coordinator). Please shower the morning of your procedure, but do not apply deodorant, creams, lotions, powders or oil to your skin. Please do not wear jewelry or makeup, and do not bring valuables with you to surgery.
In most cases, surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia. The surgery typically lasts one to two hours. An adult should escort you on the day of surgery and remain with you at home for the first 24 hours.
Day of Surgery
During the procedure, an incision will be made either in the breast area (near the areola or underneath the breast, in the crease) or in the armpit. The implant will be inserted through the incision and placed carefully behind the nipple, either under the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Once the implants are in place, the openings are sewn up and your breasts are wrapped for support and protection.
Post-Operative
Afterward, you may sleep and rest in any comfortable position. Rest quietly for 24 hours following surgery; when you get up, do so slowly, as you may feel dizzy or lightheaded.
Even though you will be up and about in a day or two, it is important that you limit your activity for optimal recovery. Expect to see some degree of temporary swelling and discoloration. The wrap will be removed after a few days, at which time you may be asked to wear a support bra. Avoid any heavy lifting, pushing or pulling for four to six weeks. Expect breast swelling for several weeks. You may be able to return to work in a few days, but avoid any vigorous exercise or direct contact with the breasts for a few weeks, as this can stress the incisions and lead to complications such as delayed wound healing or prominent scars. You should also avoid sexual activity for a week.
Risks
Risks of complications are quite low but do exist. Problems include infection, bleeding and capsular contraction, a hardening of the scar tissue around the treated area that may require additional surgery to remove the scar tissue or the implant. You may experience temporary or permanent altered sensations, including numbness. Scarring will take some time to completely heal and fade. If the scarring does not fade, corrections can be made. There is also a possibility of implant rupture, in which case the saline will be absorbed harmlessly into the body, and you will have to decide whether you would like to receive another implant.
Before long, you will enjoy breasts that are larger and in better proportion to your figure. You will fill out your clothing better and will experience new found confidence as a result.
Insurance
Most health insurance plans do not cover cosmetic procedures. In some instances, if you attempt to secure insurance reimbursement for cosmetic procedures, your insurance company may view it as fraud.
Costs
Your Patient Coordinator will provide you with a detailed, written estimate of fees for your procedure when you have your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery. Your “Estimate of Surgical Fees” will include: implants, surgeon’s fee, operating room and the anesthesiologist’s fee.
